Why become a member?

Membership in the local church is both a biblical and practical facet of Christian discipleship. Believers are not only saved from sin but are also brought into a relationship with God and with his people. This relationship is marked by faith in Christ and the sealing of the Holy Spirit who dwells inside the believer. This results in us becoming members of Christ (1 Cor. 6). The two primary New Testament metaphors for the church teach that we are members of the family of God and we are members of the body of Christ.

Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 12:27, “Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it.” And he also wrote in Romans 12:5 “So we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.” At the moment of conversion, a believer joins the universal and invisible body of believers. And as an expression of this spiritual belonging, believers are also to join a visible, local body of believers most often through a public profession of faith by means of water baptism. Belonging to a church is the context for experiencing faithful commitment to godly relationships, intentional accountability, and humble submission.
